Travelling Light – HK, Macau, China June-July 2017

Posted by on Aug 18, 2017 | No Comments

Warning, this is another image heavy post.

This was a trip I was both looking forward to as well as dreading. It was a mix of work and play for both myself and my partner. On top of this we had a rather active itinerary with some legs of the journey being organized by family over in China. I decided to travel light, very light. My kit for the trip was:

  • Sony A6000 + SELP1650
  • Nikkor AF 50mm f/1.8D + Novoflex Nikon F (G) > NEX adapter
  • Olympus Mju II
  • Leofoto MT-01 tripod + LH-25 ball head
  • Acer Aspire Switch 10E + Startech card reader
  • ThinkTank Retrospective 6

The idea was that everything had to fit into the Retro 6 which I was using as a carry on bag. This decision proved to be a very good one as I was able to handle both my luggage and my partner’s luggage when necessary. The Acer Switch 10E was a good solution for checking email, and backing up images. The combination of a 128GB microSD in the top half and a 500GB HDD in the keyboard meant that the little Switch allowed me to keep two copies of all the images I took. The Leofoto MT-01 + LH-25 tripod kit is a lot smaller than what I would carry, it is a table top tripod, but it proved to its worth plenty of times; allowing me to get images that I would not have, especially at Victoria Harbour and on waterfront in Shanghai. It also proved to be very useful in restaurants and bars.

Travelling light was a great idea, it allowed me lots of freedom. Although I did miss fast glass and both ultra-wide and telephoto lenses at times, I am not sure I would have had the same freedom if I had taken my Nikon kit.

So here are a selection of images….click through for MORE.

Film: HK, Macau, China June-July 2017

I mentioned that I was overseas for most of June, and as a treat I am sharing some film images. I was so keen to get these images that these four, yes FOUR, rolls of film jumped the queue and were processed as soon as I came back. In case you were wondering these images were all taken with my Olympus Mju II.

First up there was the only roll of colour film I took with me. Kodak Ektar 100. This was the first roll of film for the trip and it covered both HK and Macau.

Then there was a roll of Fujifilm ACROS 100. This roll was shot in HK, and it felt great just taking images with the little Mju II.

Whilst in HK I visited Camera Film Photo and picked up a few rolls of Berger Pancro 400. This was the first roll for me. Interesting film, nice tones but a little grainy. This roll was shot in China, both Shanghai and Guangzhou.

The last roll was another roll of Pancro 400. This time it was a mix of Hong Kong and Sydney.

FILM: Kodak Ektar August 2016

Another film installment, this time some Kodak Ektar from August 2016. Most of these images were taken up the coast from Sydney, on a trip away as a reward for submitting my PhD thesis. This road trip took us up past Newcastle to Smith’s Lake and Forster and then on the way back we stopped past Nelson Bay and Port Stephens.

The Fujifilm Natura Classica did the heavy lifting for this roll, it is a delightful little camera; small, light with reasonably good focus speed and exposure accuracy.

Film: Panoramic Ektar December 2015 + Arista February 2017

Another few rolls of film to share.

First up is another roll of film taken in December 2015 whilst in Germany and Austria. The Fujifilm TX-1 did the heavy lifting on that trip and there is still more rolls of film to come. These images were captured on Kodak Ektar 100 at the Neuschwanstein Castle and around Salzberg. There should still be one more roll of Ektar from this trip, so keep your eyes peeled.

As a bonus, here are a few frames of Arista EDU Ultra 400 taken on the Hasselblad 503CX in February this year. This is my first roll of this film, but it didn’t disappoint.

Autumn Colours, April 2017

Posted by on May 12, 2017 | No Comments

With the Easter and ANZAC day holidays coming very close together this year I was able to get away a few times to hunt some of the Autumn colours in the Blue Mountains and the Southern Highlands. This year it felt as if the colours were late, but the timing worked out well for me. Here are some images from three expeditions.

First up was a trip on a sunny day out to Artemis Winery in the Southern Highlands. A lazy lunch among the red and yellow vines followed by a spectacular sunset sky.

The next day I was up in the Blue Mountains with some family, once again a trip chasing colour, and another day on the road. Not as much colour at Wentworth Falls, but further up at Blackheath we were treated to lots of reds and oranges.

Finally, on ANZAC day we had a late start and a long day, this time the target was Mount Wilson, stopping along the way to visit the Hargrave Lookout and taking the car off the tarmac and onto the gravel.

Film: Panoramic Natura December 2015

Posted by on Apr 20, 2017 | No Comments

Another travel film. This time taken with my Fujifilm TX-1 (Xpan) from my trip to Munich back in December 2015. Fujifilm Natura 1600 is a wonderful film, but I suspect I pushed it a bit too far on this occasion.

Since getting this camera I have been enamoured with shooting panoramic images, and have found it to be a strangely satisfying camera to use.
