Travelling Light – HK, Macau, China June-July 2017

Warning, this is another image heavy post.

This was a trip I was both looking forward to as well as dreading. It was a mix of work and play for both myself and my partner. On top of this we had a rather active itinerary with some legs of the journey being organized by family over in China. I decided to travel light, very light. My kit for the trip was:

  • Sony A6000 + SELP1650
  • Nikkor AF 50mm f/1.8D + Novoflex Nikon F (G) > NEX adapter
  • Olympus Mju II
  • Leofoto MT-01 tripod + LH-25 ball head
  • Acer Aspire Switch 10E + Startech card reader
  • ThinkTank Retrospective 6

The idea was that everything had to fit into the Retro 6 which I was using as a carry on bag. This decision proved to be a very good one as I was able to handle both my luggage and my partner’s luggage when necessary. The Acer Switch 10E was a good solution for checking email, and backing up images. The combination of a 128GB microSD in the top half and a 500GB HDD in the keyboard meant that the little Switch allowed me to keep two copies of all the images I took. The Leofoto MT-01 + LH-25 tripod kit is a lot smaller than what I would carry, it is a table top tripod, but it proved to its worth plenty of times; allowing me to get images that I would not have, especially at Victoria Harbour and on waterfront in Shanghai. It also proved to be very useful in restaurants and bars.

Travelling light was a great idea, it allowed me lots of freedom. Although I did miss fast glass and both ultra-wide and telephoto lenses at times, I am not sure I would have had the same freedom if I had taken my Nikon kit.
