The kit

It is always interesting to see what is in another photographers bag (whether they are a professional, enthuisast or a hobbyist) and this often leads to the question as to what should be in the bag.

The short answer…..more

How many MegaPixels is enough?

With all these new digital cameras coming out with higher and higher pixel counts raises the issue of what is enough. Obviously there are advantages of higher resolution images: better detail, more ability to crop etc, but there are a number of drawbacks as well: smaller pixels, higher noise levels etc. SO where is that optimum trade off? Why do those pixel counts keep jumping?….more

Peak Hour Public Transport

I had the joy of negotiating peak hour buses this morning with my gear (picture me carrying a fully loaded Vertex 200 with my tripod – Manfrotto 055 ProB + 322 RC2 – strapped on as well). Let me just say that it made the trip rather interesting.  It was not the first time I have attempted this exercise, but the first time that I have done so whilst using the tripod attachment on this bag, it does not make it any easier (in fact is it easier to carry the tripod separately).

I was rather lucky today, with my bus being on the empty side, but getting off still presents itself with dramas, with that narrow aisle that has to be negotiated and the people on either side that sit half into that aisle as well as the people that are trying to get on and off at the same time. (Note: try to avoid this situation it is no fun). At least I can give kudos to Lowepro for their magnificent bag design that keeps it all comfortable.

So today’s lesson is: “Avoid peak hour public transport when carrying masses of camera gear, if you have to carry a full blown backpack and a tripod, do so seperately it is easier”

Underwater Photography!!

Today i went snorkelling (the first time for me, but I have been scuba diving before) and I took my new toy (see post below). Although the conditions were not optimum for either photography or snorkelling, I managed to get a few random shots too share.

The snorkelling was fun, but the price was high (I lost my brand new mask and snorkel!!). Hopefully there will be plenty of underwater photos to come!

UPDATE*** -Another New Toy!!! (well tomorrow I will have one)

I am pretty excited at the moment, I just found out that Fujifilm Aust has outdone themselves and managed to ship my WP-FXF 100 (underwater casing for my Fujifilm Finepix F100fd) today, so I can pick it up tomorrow, in time for my snorkelling outing on Saturday. Underwater pics here I come!!!

Gear Lust

We all have this at some point, at the moment I have it pretty badly. I have always wanted the Zoom-Nikkor AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8 VR, it is an awesome lens and worth every bit they ask for it. I am starting to get to a point where I need (well at least believe) this lens, and am in the process of scouting out the best way to get one. What I have not thought about in great detail is BAGS. My current small kit bags will not accomodate this lens, and my giant backpack will have to be restructured, so it appears that another addition to the collection is being called for.

Enter the Lowepro….

I love my Lowepro, but it looks like I will have a difficult time finding one that will fit the bill at the point in time, in fact looking at Kata, Tamrac and Crumpler is not helping much either. The choice has been narrowed down to Magnum AW. Compact AW and Nova 200 AW, but none of these three really suit the bill perfectly.  The Magnum and the Compact have the build quality that I like but are a little on the small side to carry this lens vertically, the Nova has lesser build but should swallow it up comfortably. All of these bags are GIANT!!!! Lets not think about cost just yet.

What am I to do? The purchase of this lens will not only be a blow to the budget but also a lead to the need to purchase at least filters and probably another bag. To top this all off I spotted a Marumi ring flash that I would not mind playing with either!!!

Oh gear lust!!!

RLWC Aust 52 Vs Fiji 0

I went to the game last night, I only found out on short notice but I can’t complain. It was entertaining at times but overall a pretty poor game. There were highlight, Greg Inglis’s amazing act of body control to score that try, Billy Slater’s try saves, Brent Tate’s amazing run and Hayne’s big hit on Lockyer, but the amount of mistakes was shocking. It was great to see that the Fijian’s had a very vocal group of fans, but also very dissappointing to see that the turn out was so small, a mere 15,855. Despite the scoreline, I cannot say that it was a one sided game, the Fijian’s tested the Australian defence a number of times, and without the likes of Slater and Inglis the scoreboard could have reflected this.

Sitting near the tryline, in row ‘U’ I really missed my DSLR and long lenses as I only had my trustly little Fuji F100fd with me. But memories of the difficulty of getting a D300 and a long lens into games has meant I will have to seriously consider what I bring to a game in the future, so maybe it was better not to have had a DSLR. Suprisingly, there were a lot of shots that the little Fuji managed to capture, unfortunately it did not have the zoom to bring me into the action.

I just thought I would share what I do when I am not taking photos. I am a Honours student at Sydney University, this is the gear that I work with.
